We worked with Veolia Environmental Services to create the Recycling Discovery Centre on the site of the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility.
The Centre is a new learning resource for the schools and residents of London. Featuring hands on exhibits and activities set within themed environments, this centre encourages visitors to rethink their everyday waste habits, appreciate the value of recycling and get a first hand experience of Veolia’s materials recycling facility. The Recycling Discovery Centre is designed for children of primary age from 4-11. We worked with local primary school children on the development of the experiences to ensure that the content was pitched at the right level, and the activities were truly engaging and effective.
Highlight experiences include:
- The mini Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where children can control conveyor belts, use a shaker system, sort items using magnets and blast jets of air to remove glass, card, steel and plastic;
- A ‘Material Detectives’ activity where children undertake a range of tests on materials to find out what they are, where they come from and what they can be made into;
- A foot operated ‘Recycle or Not’ exhibit, challenging children to sort their rubbish against the clock.
